Israel has announced a 10,001-strong “Eco English” programme to help the country’s growing online learning market.
The announcement was made at the end of a five-day national workshop organised by Israel’s Ministry of Education and Culture, which drew a huge crowd of more than 5,000 people.
The programme will be implemented over the next two years.
Eco-English will focus on the production and delivery of teaching materials for ESL and will provide a “global platform” for the country to “provide the highest quality, quality-controlled, sustainable education for our young people,” according to a statement from the ministry.
It will include a “multi-disciplinary” approach to the teaching of English, and will offer a “world-class” curriculum that “provides an alternative to the current system of state-funded, state-approved courses”.
The new initiative follows a successful test run of the Eco English test in Israel last summer, which showed the programme was popular and effective, with students scoring highly on the test and making a number of high-profile visits to ESL classrooms.
The programme has been described as “the first of its kind” by the Israel Education and Research Council, which said that the programme is “one of the first and the most significant innovations to the Israeli education system in a long time”.
